Email marketing: What is it? How does it work? Does it convert? Is it hard to do? Should I be doing it? How to get better at it?

There are always a bunch of questions when it comes to email marketing that we ask. When you think of emails, you kind of think of those annoying things we get that don't work and that we want to report as spam, and for a large amount of people, this is true.

A lot of people actually get really annoyed by EDMs, and that is something that we, as marketers, need to consider.

So what are they?

They are the electronic direct mail, or EDM, that we get to our mail provider. Some mail providers are better than others at knowing which ones are spam and which ones aren't.

How does it work?

Well, that's quite simple. We design them up, using a platform or even just design software, and then we upload them into another platform and send them out.

Is it hard to do?

It is hard to make successful. A lot of people get really annoyed by them, so we need to make sure that we are monitoring how we are getting people signed up, how we are recording their info, and making sure they know they have signed up to receive the emails. Otherwise, you will get marked as spam, which can be really damaging.

Do they convert?

They actually convert really well and are a great messaging tool to use. From industry experts I have worked with, they can contribute as much as 20% of the revenue for your company.

What emails should I make?

That is a good question. You can create emails for most things. Since I work at Bargain Chemist, we make sales-focused ones, but you can do newsletters, updates on your business, deals you have coming up, and more.

What makes a good design?

That is up to the eye, but emails that flow really well and aren't block-type are best. Make sure there is a call to action button like "Sign Up," "Shop Now," or "Subscribe." Another good one to include in them is to make sure that you have prices on things you're trying to sell, as well as making sure that you can link them to the page the customer goes to, since we want to make the customer journey as easy as we can.
